A truly unique event awaits you at the Miami Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, promoting the art and sport of dragon boat racing. What is dragon boat racing? For one, it’s the second-fastest growing outdoor sport in the word.
Combining tradition with modern-day teamwork, enthusiasm and strategy, the racing boats carry 20 paddlers, one drummer and one steersperson. The boats weigh about 500 pounds. The teams race down a 250-meter waterway, creating a blur of excitement and competitive spirit.
Whether or not you know the ancient history associated with this type of racing, you will love the energy and color of this event. Teams work feverishly to reach the end of the waterway, with crowds cheering them on all the way.
The event’s purpose is to share Asian culture with the community. Proceeds from the festival promote the sport and toward charitable activities. Dance, music and acrobatics round out the show.
