The Coconut Grove Playhouse was built as a glamorous movie house in 1926 and today is home to two stages for live theater; the 1,100 seat proscenium Mainstage Theater and the 135 seat cabaret style Encore Room. The building was built in 1927 and the Playhouse in 1956. Dedicated to nurturing potential creativity and serving South Florida’s diverse community, the Coconut Grove Playhouse Education Department has carved an unconventional niche for itself through its distinctive approach to community outreach. While many regional theaters interact with their communities solely through acting classes, the Coconut Grove Playhouse is distinctive in its fervent dedication to social service. For the Playhouse, theater is a tool, an instrument that provokes young minds to reach for confidence and self-awareness in a world that demands it.
