Deering Estate at Cutler is a 450 acre oasis on Biscayne Bay south of Miami. Charles Deering, son of the founder of International Harvester Machines of Chicago, made Miami his family‘s winter home. Land was purchased in the old town of Cutler (hence the name) and in 1916 the first inn in the area (Richmond Cottage) began its transformation to a family home.
As you enter the property through the Historic Main Entrance (a restored Main Entrance is expected to open by May 2001) you feel you‘re peeking into Miami‘s past. The large Stone House and other buildings are at the end of a long tree-lined driveway. As you walk past the house, down the long front yard leading to the boat turn around, you can envision the privileged, private life lived by the Deering family on this estate.
