Overview
Named after the late
Miami newspaper editor who championed this area for a state park, Bill Baggs
Cape Florida State Park is part of a large barrier island ecosystem. Following
Hurricane Andrew in 1992, an extensive restoration program was undertaken. The
goal of the program is to restore the natural plant communities and systems
historically associated with the island.
Have you ever been on a beach that was voted one of the “Top 10 Beaches in the
U.S.” looking out to sea and asked “Can it get any better than this?” Well, at
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park we think we think that the staff and
volunteers can make the perfect moment even better. You can join them and see
the beach from a bird’s-eye view. Be ready to ascend the 109 steps to the
lighthouse watch room and enjoy the view of the beach, Miami and Biscayne Bay
from the top, view a short movie, and then tour the Keeper’s Quarters.
Lighthouse tours are at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Thursdays through Mondays.
Please arrive one-half hour early to sign up, as space is limited.
